The University of Manchester offers an intriguing PhD studentship on traceable characterization of a novel ultrafine aerosol source for equipment calibration.
All applications are eligible for this four-year EPSRC Aerosol CDT project led by Bristol University. For 2024/25, the winner will receive a tax-free stipend of £19,237 and tuition coverage.
Manchester University: Earth and Environmental Sciences Overview of Project
This project aims to turn a commercial Silver Particle Generator (SPG) into a UK-class calibration facility.
The revolutionary SPG particle generator produces ultrafine particles with modal sizes from 2 to 80 nm.
It is helpful for particle number and mass calibrations due to its stability and repeatability.
The study will also investigate using non-silver materials to make the SPG multi-source.
This involves characterizing materials, analyzing their attributes (shape, mean diameters, effective densities), and evaluating their standard applicability.
The research will also model the transport and losses of these novel materials using CDT expertise.
Manchester University: Opportunities for Research and Training
The successful PhD student will spend most of their time learning the current SPG at Manchester University. They will next work with NPL and CI to broaden SPG applications.
It will take time at NPL to make the instrument a national calibration centre and comprehend ISO certification standards. This will provide a nationwide NPL service and increase CI’s economic potential.
The student will additionally train at CI in Germany to program and improve the SPG with new materials.
