Newcastle University PhD Programs Overview

Climate change, rising consumer demand, and global trade that spreads pests and illnesses threaten agricultural output and resilience. In this PhD, you will employ cell-free synthetic biology to find key viruses and their vectors to improve in-field diagnostics and surveillance.

You will design molecular cascades to identify target species and verify their sensitivity and specificity. Students will practise cell-free transcription/translation reactions, mathematical modelling of biological systems, and statistical Design of Experiments.

Multifunctional materials for extracting, identifying, and discriminating targets will be created using pipetting robotics and cell-free molecular biology reactions embedded in hydrogels.

Newcastle University PhD Programs Standards for Eligibility

A minimum of 2:1 Honours degree or foreign equivalent in biological sciences or a comparable field relevant to PhD project

Research passion, independent thinking, good analytical skills, and effective verbal and written communication

For pre-settled UK and EU applicants, home fees are covered; overseas applicants pay the difference.

For non-native English speakers, an IELTS score is 6.5 (minimum 5.5 in all subskills).
