The PhD Studentship aims to integrate routine pharmacogenomics testing into general practice at Norfolk Coast Healthcare.

Pharmacogenomics PhD Programs Overview

Personalised medicine uses genetics to guide treatment. For instance, liver enzymes affect drug efficacy. Pharmacogenomics is this study area. PGx is rarely used in UK clinical practice despite strong scientific evidence.

• Genomic and AI integration will transform healthcare. Successful implementation requires patient and public participation.
• Sir Chris Whitty’s CMO Report 2023 emphasises coastal population health as a health policy priority. Optimising prescribing for this patient population may benefit the local health economy.
• Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) cause 6–7% of hospital admissions, half of which are preventable (Pirmohamed et al., BMJ 2004; 329:15).
• Empowering underserved populations like the North Norfolk coastal community allows NHS primary care to integrate PGx better. This initiative seeks to overcome obstacles, address concerns, and detail implementation strategies.

University of East Anglia Project Stages

First Stage: Assess Global Primary Care PGx Practice:

Assess global primary care PGx practices with a thorough evaluation of literature.

Learn Routine PGx Testing Integration:

Assess North Norfolk Coast patients’ and professionals’ acceptance of routine PGx testing.

Use focus groups, qualitative surveys, and GP and community chemist interviews.

Estimate PGx-modifiable prescriptions using local prescribing datasets.

In Stage 2, the chosen candidate will work with local health and county government teams to:

Create and test coastal heath PGx services.

For systematic drug reviews, create a generic digital solution or pathway for PGx results.

Collaborate with regional NHS agencies like Genomics East on community-specific pathways like stroke antiplatelets.

University of East Anglia PhD Programs Entry Requirements

What applicants need:

MPharm or primary/MSc in biology, behavioural science, public health, or similar fields.

Excellent organisational, interpersonal, and collaborative skills.

Qualitative methodology and intervention development experience (training provided).

A UK driving licence will be required as project components will be delivered to NHS sites on the North Norfolk coast.
