Fully Funded PhD Programs Project Summary 2024

A novel multi-fidelity model for nuclear thermal hydraulic systems will be developed in this PhD study co-funded by Rolls-Royce Submarines.

2D/3D CFD and 1D sub-system models will be combined to provide a more efficient and accurate simulation tool.

Fully Funded PhD Programs: Project Details

• Duration: 3.5 years

• Funding: Full tuition + £19,237 tax-free stipend (UK students only).

• Location: Manchester Project Goals

• Create a hybrid 1D/3D multi-fidelity thermal-hydraulic simulation method.

• Explore volumetric coupling, which avoids boundary-based coupling issues.

• Automate high-fidelity CFD simulation region identification with machine learning.

• Parametric mapping for multi-fidelity simulations is optional.

• Work with Rolls-Royce Submarines to gain industry experience.

PhD Programs Qualifications of Candidates

A 2.1 honours degree or Master’s degree in science or engineering (British nationals only owing to security clearance).

Excellent programming abilities (C++/Python preferable).

Very good at fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics.

An advantage: a machine learning experience.

Excellent writing and speaking skills.
