PhD Programs Project Details

Cranfield University’s photonic sensors PhD curriculum lets you join the robots revolution. Future robotics depend on improved flexibility and performance; therefore, better, cheaper sensors are needed.

This project, funded by a departmental scholarship, will bring optical sensing technology from the lab to prototypes for robots and automation.

You will thrive in an inclusive, collaborative, supportive research atmosphere, receive customized training, and learn in-demand technical skills. In addition to a tax-free stipend of up to £20,000, all UK fees are covered.

Robotics, manufacturing, and automation technologies that increase productivity, enable smaller production runs, permit quick reconfiguration and programming, and support different activities are in demand. Advanced sensing is needed to achieve these goals.

Traditional fixed manufacturing robot arms do single tasks with 0.10mm movement control. Mobile robots struggle to maintain precision. Other uses, including robotic manipulation, require several low-cost, physiologically inspired sensors.

PhD candidates create prototype photonic sensors to improve robot performance. This technique uses optical interferometry and image processing to provide high-precision positioning and tactile sensing cheaper than computer vision.

You’ll study high-precision location, mobile robot navigation, high-speed target tracking, distributed touch sensing, and sensor-AI integration.

You aim to design and test prototypes for these demands using our advanced robotic test platforms.

Cranfield University, the UK’s only postgraduate University, offers a unique PhD atmosphere. You’ll join the Centre for Engineering Photonics (EP), a world-renowned research centre that develops optical apparatus for complex measurement challenges in aviation, manufacturing, environmental monitoring, and biological diagnostics.

In our welcoming, collaborative, and supportive research-only Centre, researchers of all levels thrive.

You will design and test prototype sensors with new robotics and automation capabilities to make them key technologies for applied robotics research.

You will also do lab work and integrate prototype sensors with our small robotics test facilities, comprising a robot arm and an omnidirectional mobile robot platform.

Successful projects may result in University or external cooperation and intellectual property production and protection.

Cranfield University Fully Funded PhD Programs Entry requirements

A first—or second-class UK honours degree in physical science, engineering, or a similar field is required. No optics experience is needed; comprehensive training will be provided.
