Head Start into HE Research Evaluation

The University of Birmingham School of Education is pleased to offer a PhD studentship to evaluate the “Head Start into HE” curriculum.
The Inner Circle Education Trust funds this effort to help care-experienced youth transition to higher education between 2023-24 and 2029-30.
University of Birmingham Fully Funded PhD Program Overview
The “Head Start into HE” programme helps care-experienced youth transition into higher education by providing resources and coaching.
- Two student cohorts will provide qualitative feedback and educational progression statistics for the program’s evaluation.
A remarkable team is leading this research, including Professor Chris Millward and Professor Ian McGimpsey from Birmingham, Patricia Ambrose from NNECL, and Dr Claire Crawford from Cambridge.
Details on PhD Study
The selected PhD student will study care-experienced students’ educational advancement part-time.
They will collaborate with the project team to collect, evaluate, and share programme data from 2025-26 to 2029-30. Research will support the student’s PhD thesis.
University of Birmingham Fully Funded PhD Studentship Key duties:
Relationship Building: Get along with the project team, local authorities, and funder.
- Engagement: Use secure and trusted methods to engage care-experienced youth in the program.
- Project Management: Follow protocols, track progress, identify risks, and report results.
- Data Collection: Schedule, perform, and transcribe interviews, securely store records, and analyze pertinent research at a desk.
- Support the design and conduct of care-experienced youth surveys and data analysis, especially using national sources.
Reporting: Help the project team write and present findings.
Fully Funded PhD Demands for candidates
A first degree and preferably a master’s in education and youth support are required.
- Interviews, surveys, and data analysis should be part of their social science mixed methods research expertise.
- Candidates must also have good communication, project management, and relationship-building skills.
